Transition Project – Me

3rd Year at Art School. 1st Semester. But here’s the question: what do I want to do? I don’t have too long left before heading out into the world with a finished degree in Contemporary Art Practice. I’ll be an artist. I am an artist. I need to start directing myself towards a specialisation and an idea of what kind of artist I want to be.

What worked so far? Techniques? Styles? Themes?

The project only lasted for 2 weeks… and it was full on.

I wrote out all my main projects from the last couple of years, analysing their success using these criteria: public feedback, personal engagement, technique ability/interest, theme development/engagement/feedback. I made a couple of conclusions:

Last year was supposed to be a year for technique experimentation and exploration and yet semester 2 was fully online not allowing me to explore the techniques that I had yet to try out. Therefore, I need to make up for the lost time. I want to learn etching and sculpture (stone and wood)…

Next.

What type of artist do I want to be:

I want to be true to what I believe in, as I do think that it is difficult to stay true to that in todays climate. My work should be honest, truthful, researched, skillful and in some way I want to find a way of helping others.

Finding artists that inspire me is easy when it comes to technique. Although I am finding it more difficult when it comes to contemporary artist. This is giong to be big focus on me within this semester. However, when it comes to finding artists that I respect for not only their technique and style but also for the themes and topics they touch up on: I am finding it much harder… hence the empty space, that is still yet to be filled.

Themes: Developing ideas for what I want to represent supports the techniques that I want to use as depending on what I want to show different styles, techniques and research will be used. For the near future, my main two focuses will be on: motherhood (fertility and life) and national identity (Polish/British, immigration, self identity).

Goal

My final statement of intent will come in the next post, alongside the final piece to support it.
